HANDS / FINGERS - HAND TO REMAIN OPEN, FLAT, WITH FINGERS SLIGhTLY APART AS YOU PULL THROUGH THE WATER TO MAXIMISE SURFACE AREA.
STROKE LENGTH - REACH FULLY TOWARDS THE NOSE FOR WATER ENTRY, THEN PULLING THROUGH CLOSE TO YOUR RAIL, RIGHT PAST YOUR WAIST AND DOWN TO YOUR THIGH BEFORE REMOVING YOUR HAND FROM THE WATER.
HIGH ELBOW - ON THE REACH AND PULL PHASE, HIGH Elbows Increase your propulsion by increasing your surface area under water.
BOARD Nose - CUTTING THROUGH THE WATER, RATHER than HIGH and 'PLowing' forwards.
QUIET STROKES - SPlash free hand entry into the water at the top of the reach phase with Minimal flicking of water and end of pull through.
HEAD POSITIONING - Head in a neutral, comfortable position with your eyes focused in direction of paddle.

STROKE RATE - MORE, FASTER STROKES TO SPRINT INTO THE WAVE.
HEAD Positioning - PUSHING YOUR CHIN DOWN TOWARDS YOUR BOARD. LOWERS YOUR NOSE IN THE WATER LINE AND REDUCES RESISTANCE AS YOU MOVE FORWARD.
HEAD STILL - RESIST THE URGE TO TURN YOUR HEAD FROM SIDE TO SIDE, KEEP IT STILL AND OVER THE STRINGER, REDUCING BOARD ROLL AND MAINTAINING FORWARD MOMENTUM.
KICKING - RAISES THE TAIL OF THE BOARD IN THE WATER, LOWERING RESISTANCE AS YOU MOVE FORWARDS. Keep KICKS hard and low, with feet remaining in the water as much as possible.

DUCK DIVING IS ESSENTIAL TO HELP NAVIGATE LINEUPS.
THE FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSE OF duck diving is to submerge you and your surfboard, to allow whitewater or a curling wave to pass over you.
Quality Duck dives are critical to reduce time and effort in returning to the lineup, as well as serving to keep you safe around other surfers or obstacles.
Before you begin the physical motion of the duck dive, it is important to have speed and momentum moving towards the oncoming whitewater.
THE TIMING OF THE DUCK DIVE NEEDS TO BE SO THAT IN THE TIME YOU TAKE TO COMPLETE THE PHYSICAL MOVEMENT UNDERWATER, THE WAVE PASSES Over you.
Too early and you will surface before or during the oncoming whitewater.
TOo LATE and the whitewater will hit you before you have submerged.
The technical aspects of the duck dive are best broken into steps.
- The Push Down. Hands gripping rails, in line with your chest / shoulders. Push the nose and front half of the board below the surface of the water.
- KNEE DOWN. With a single knee, drive the tail of your board below the surface of the water.
- head down and drive forwards. dive below the surface with your head and shoulders down towards your sunken surfboard. simultaneously use your knee and arms to drive your board forward, extending your arms AND PROJECTING forward and up towards the surface. Picture yourself trying to thrust your board clear and to the other side of the whitewater.
- REACH ANd SURFACE. With your board now driving towards the surface and the bulk of the whitewater now behind you, close the distance between your chest and board and pull yourself back to your original paddling position.
ADVANCED VARIATIONS OF THE DUCK DIVE INCLUDE USING YOUR FOOT OR SHIN RATHER THAN KNEE TO DRIVE THE TAIL OF YOUR BOARD DOWN AND THRUST FORWARD.
